Ahmed Afaal received a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in the field of Health Information Management (1998) from the University of Sydney in Australia. He completed his postgraduate degree in Master of Arts, Health Services Management (2001) at the University of Manchester, UK with his research thesis titled Healthcare Financing: A Case for Reform in the Maldives.
His research interests are in the areas of healthcare financing, health systems development, and tobacco control.
Affiliations and Professional Experience
Ahmed Afaal has almost 10 years of senior management experience in the health sector of the Maldives with his last position as the Director for Health Systems Development at the Ministry of Health (2007). Since 2007 he is serving as the Managing Director of ADK Hospital, the largest private healthcare organization in the Maldives. He is also active in his voluntary social role serving as the Vice Chair of the Interim Planning Group for the formation of the Maldivian Red Crescent Society and later as a Board Member of MRC from 2009 to 2010. He also is an elected member and chair of the School Board of Thajuddeen School. He is also a member of the National Tobacco Control Committee and has contributed at the forefront in the formulation of the National Tobacco Control Law passed in 2010.
